Advanced Conducting (String Quartet Sessions)
Our Advanced Conducting series provide rare and sought-after conducting opportunities of working with a real ensemble, thus elevating the studies of conducting to the next level. Participants will conduct on podium on a rotating basis under the tutelage of the instructor, our Music Director Ho-man Choi. Each participant will have a minimum of 20 minutes per lesson working with a lab string quartet of 4 professional musicians.
Target Groups:
(For age 16+, or students with special permission to join)
For orchestra/ choir/ band directors, section/ part leaders, song leaders, teachers, orchestra/ choir/ band members, instrumentalists who want to improve ensemble skills.
Eligibility:
You are encouraged to provide us with a link to your resume/ CV / video footage of your recent performance/ rehearsal in the capacity of a conductor (5 - 10 minutes) while filling in the application form. Successful candidates will be informed by WhatsApp/ email within 1-2 days.

Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University and Master of Music in instrumental conducting from the Indiana University School of Music (Double Masters)

Former Resident Conductor of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra

an internationally recognized conducting teacher whose private students have been accepted into world-renowned conducting schools and notably to the Instrumental Conducting program at Indiana University School of Music in successive years, and Musicology Doctoral Program at Harvard University

a faculty member at the Hong Kong Baptist University, teaching Instrumental and Choral Conducting

co-hosted conducting workshops with Maestro Jahja Ling –Emmy-award winning conductor who holds the longest working relationship with the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra
Number of Students: 4 – 9 people
The workshop is held similar to a masterclass. Each student will take turn to conduct a string quartet in front of the class (podium time). The instructor will give comments to each student who is conducting. Meanwhile, the other students will observe as auditors. Each student will have a minimum of 20 minutes of podium time on average per lesson.
